Chancellor's pledge to give tobacco tax to NHS will be money wellspent

ASH warmly welcomed today's announcement by the Chancellor of theExchequer that the tax raised from future tobacco excise duty riseswould go to the NHS.

ASH Research Manager, Amanda Sandford, said: "This is excellent news. There can be no better way of using the money raised by tobacco taxes.

"We hope that some of the extra money would be used to help peoplestop smoking as that is one of the most cost-effective measures thatthe NHS can provide. Additionally, we would like to see some of thisnew money being used to treat patients with smoking-related illnesses. The combination of high taxes on tobacco plus extra resources to helppeople stop smoking will lead to even more lives being saved."
