  • Sefton Central MP backs call for cigarettes in plainer packets

    Bill Esterson, the Sefton Central representative, has pledged support to both the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) in their call to put all cigarettes in plain packets with no attractive colours.

    Mr Esterson was among a group of MPs who were shown a short film which featured young people’s reactions to different packet designs.

  • Imperial Tobacco takings fall as Spain woes persist

    Imperial Tobacco said yesterday its cigarette volumes fell seven per cent in the final quarter of 2011 after sales were hit by a tough Spanish market, Syrian sanctions and destocking in Ukraine and the US.

    It added that sales were down by one per cent in the period but rose three per cent when stripping out the impact of those four markets.

  • Cigarette-making plant one of the biggest ever found

    A Nottinghamshire man involved in conspiracies to defraud the revenue out of millions of pounds has been jailed for seven years and four months.

    He helped set up an illegal cigarette-making factory – the biggest found by customs in the East Midlands and among the biggest nationally – in a unit in Chesterfield.

    Robinson also had another scheme on the go involving counterfeit alcohol.

    Nottingham Crown Court heard his plans never came to fruition as investigators began dismantling the plots in 2009.

  • US Judge: health labels may stem tobacco co rights

    A federal rule requiring large graphic health warnings on cigarette packaging and advertising may violate the free speech rights of tobacco companies, a U.S. district court judge said.
