  • Wirral to consider voluntary smoking ban in outdoor play areas

Smoking in outdoor play areas could be banned in Wirral, under proposals being considered by the council.

The move has been welcomed by anti-smoking groups who say smoking in play areas sets a poor example for youngsters.

Under the plans, Wirral Council is being asked to seek a voluntary ban – but will also look at powers under the Government’s up-coming Localism Bill to make these legally enforceable.

The motion to full council next Monday is being proposed by Lib-Dem councillor Pat Williams, who said they hoped it could help reduce the number of young people taking up smoking.

The proposal, coordinated by Heart of Mersey, has been welcomed by ASH

  • Cigarette sales at stores rise follow vending ban

Convenience stores in England are reporting moderate rises in their tobacco sales following the ban on tobacco vending machines, which came into force on October 1.

Independent retailer David Worsfold of Farrants in Cobham, Surrey, said his cigarette sales were up on last year, and had climbed in the last few months as local pubs and cafés removed their tobacco vending machines.

"I supported the ban completely," David said. "For underage smokers, vending machines were the quick and easy way to purchase their cigarettes. This action, together with the introduction of a licensing scheme for tobacco retailers is all that's necessary to clamp down on underage sales. All this talk of a display ban should be scrapped," he added.

  • Leeds: Real-life Del Boy & Rodney jailed for £200,000 cig scam

A real-life Del Boy and Rodney who drove around in a replica Only Fools and Horses van have been jailed for a £200,000 cigarette scam.

Dodgy Trevor Wales, 54, and son Richard, 28, cheated Revenue and Customs out of huge amounts of tax duty by selling foreign cigarettes and rolling tobacco on the cheap for six years.

When police raided their home wife Mary, 53, tried to hide £5,000 in her underwear – but it fell out in front of officers. In one room they had £16,000 in £1,000 bundles.

Now Trevor has been sentenced to two years and three months’ jail after admitting VAT evasion while Richard was given 15 months.

Mary, who acted as the banker for the scam, got a suspended 12-month sentence after admitting two offences of converting criminal property.

  • Study shows impact of Michigan's smoking ban

Results from an air monitoring study conducted before and after Michigan's Dr. Ron Davis Smoke Free Air Law took effect indicate a 93 percent reduction in the level of secondhand smoke air pollutants in restaurants after the law went into effect.

The air monitoring study was conducted in the same 77 restaurants before and after the law took effect on May 1, 2010.

All 77 restaurants that allowed smoking before the law have been smoke-free since the law took effect. Prior to the law, 85 percent of the restaurants in the study had poor to dangerous air quality. After enactment of the law, the venues' levels of secondhand smoke pollutants dropped by a median of 93 percent.

The study was conducted in 13 cities representing six major regions of the state.
