  • Lowestoft landlady pleads guilty to letting people smoke in pub

    A Lowestoft landlady has pleaded guilty to failing to prevent smoking in a smoke-free premises. She was fined £80 and ordered to pay £165 costs.

    Mrs Fox claimed she tried to stop people smoking inside the lobby entrance to the pub, but people did not always listen.

  • Hertfordshire health bosses support car smoking ban

    NHS Hertfordshire says it's backing calls for a total ban on smoking in cars.

    A Ten Minute Rule bill providing for a ban on smoking in cars with children present is scheduled to go before the House of Commons for its second reading today.

  • ‘Put me behind bars’, says anti-smoking ban campaigner

    Anti-smoking ban campaigner Chris Carter claims the police could arrive at his door at any moment to arrest him and take him away to serve up to 47 days in a Northern Ireland prison cell for not paying a £1,250 fine for lighting up illegally in Bangor’s Town Hall.

    The staunch opponent of the five year old smokefree legislation says he is determined to fight it to his last breath and will forfeit his freedom rather than pay the fine.

  • Wetherspoons to open 50 more pubs this year

    JD Wetherspoon will press ahead with plans to open 50 pubs this year despite a squeeze on profit margins.

    The chain said that like-for-like sales in the 12 weeks to January 15 increased 3.6%, which was up from 1.1% in the previous quarter.

    Its outspoken chairman said Wetherspoon has been "the pre-eminent pub company" in recent years, helped by its aim of providing "reasonable" prices.

    Wetherspoon has been opening about 50 pubs a year recently and created some 2,800 jobs in its last financial year.

  • Nottinghamshire: Pupils win award for 'choke if you smoke' campaign

    Radford Primary School has become the latest to scoop the DrugAware Award.

    It is given to schools which are working to tackle substance and alcohol misuse.

    Staff worked closely with the school council and the pupils chose the theme "If you smoke, I will choke" because they wanted to encourage all adults not to smoke around them.

  • USA: State of Tobacco Control Report released

    The American Lung Association has released the State of Tobacco Control 2012, an annual report that provides grades to the federal government and all 50 states and the District of Columbia on four key tobacco control areas.
