  • Tesco trials screens ahead of ban on tobacco display

    Tesco is gearing up for next year's tobacco display ban by trialling screens across the front of tobacco kiosks.

    The plain white screens were spotted at the supermarket's store in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, this week.

  • Playgrounds across Wales targeted in new moves to stub out smoking in public

    The Welsh Government's new tobacco control action plan proposes restricting smoking on all hospital and NHS grounds, and in school and children’s playgrounds.

    A ban on the sale of cigarettes from vending machines is to enter into force on 01 February 2012.

  • EU: Questions raised over illicit trade agreements

    Sir Graham Watson, a member of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe at the European Parliament, has asked whether the Commission is going to ask the European Anti-Fraud Office to investigate allegations that raise questions about Japan Tobacco International’s approach to its illicit trade agreement with the EU.

  • Imperial Tobacco challenges Australia plain packaging laws

    Imperial Tobacco has launched a legal challenge in Australia's High Court against new laws forcing tobacco products to be sold in plain packaging from next year, becoming the third tobacco company to do so.

  • Canada: Smoking banned in Vancouver’s parks

    A new law has been adopted unanimously by the city council this week, which provides for the prohibition of  smoking and tobacco use in Vancouver’s parks and recreation centers within the next 30 days.

  • New Zealand: Boy forced to eat cigarette butt

    An investigation into a three-year-old boy's guardians has revealed that they forced him to eat a cigarette butt.

    In 2007, the boy is said to have picked up a cigarette butt, put it in his mouth and spat it out again.

    He was then allegedly taken inside the house and made to eat the cigarette butt and told: "If it's good enough for you to do it outside, it's good enough to do it inside. Go on, chew it."
