Italians join trend towards smoke-free provision in public places

The campaign for smoke-free public places in Italy received a boost last
week when the Italian Senate approved a measure that would forbid cigar and
cigarette smoking in public places and require restaurants to confine
smoking to special sections and to install ventilation systems. On Sunday,
President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi joined the fledgling campaign by publicly
lending his support to the measure. A report in the International Herald
Tribune (originally reported in the New York Times) notes the growing trend
towards smoke-free places in Europe. Other countries in the process of
introducing legislation to control smoking in public include Ireland and
Greece.

Alcohol, not smoking linked to breast cancer

Most papers report on a major review of the risk factors for breast cancer
which concludes that alcohol consumption raises the risk but not smoking.
The review, combining data from 53 studies of 150,000 women, has led to the
conclusion that drinking causes about 2,000 cases of breast cancer in the UK
each year -4 per cent of the total. However, Sir Richard Doll, one of the
report’s authors, said women should not rush to give up alcohol, noting that
“It does carry a small risk of breast cancer but there are small risks with
everything enjoyable”.

GSK gears up to F1 deal

GlaxoSmithKline is poised to join the world of motor racing, according to a
report in F1 Racing magazine. No further details are provided but the
journal’s ‘exclusive’ scoop implies that GSK will be stepping in to replace
the tobacco companies who are withdrawing as a result of the FIA’s agreement
to end tobacco sponsorship of the sport by 2006

Fag phobia

This week’s Spectator magazine includes an article criticising the
government’s policy on tobacco control. The author Neil Clark harks back
to an imagined golden age noting for example, that New Labour “draws its
inspiration not from the warm, sociable atmosphere of the smoke-filled
rooms… but from an altogether sanitised and less friendly environment.”
The article goes in similar style to criticise the tobacco smuggling control
policy and educational campaigns.
