‘Spanish cigarette ‘exporter’ has Britain’s customs officers 'in a
fog'.

The owner of a Spanish based internet website, which sells cheap
cigarettes to British residents, said yesterday he was merely
exploiting “a legal loophole” reports Alistair Osborne.

The report continues that he ‘guarantees delivery by DHL courier in
three working days for a delivery charge of £9. The paper reports that
huge ‘savings’ can be made from buying cigarettes this way. It says
that 800 Benson & Hedges cigarettes costs £89, compared to £157.20 in
the UK.

Behavioural insights into cancer control

This week’s Lancet profiles David Hill, of the centre for Behavioural
Research in Cancer, in Melbourne. As well as taking a lead role in
skin cancer prevention, he has also been closely associated with
Australia’s anti-smoking campaign. The message, “Every Cigarette is
doing you damage” drove thousands of prospective quitters to telephone
helplines and increased the number of adults quitting smoking.

The article further reports that ‘Hill believes that information
technology will be increasingly important…Overall, Hill is optimistic
about the future of tobacco control. The lessons learned from
Australia’s campaign have already been used in the USA and have been
adapted for use in the New Zealand and Singapore and WHO is developing
a framework for international tobacco control.’
