Clue to Lung Cancer

‘British Scientists have discovered that women smokers are more
susceptible to lung cancer than men because they have higher levels of
an enzyme in the lungs that converts tobacco smoke into carcinogens.’
reports the Times

Tobacco firms try to thwart ad ban

Tobacco firms could ‘bypass the forthcoming British advertising ban by
introducing US-style freephone numbers on the side of cigarette
packets, with an invitation to smokers to listen companies singing
their own praises.

The Department of Health is reported as saying, “We’d say it would
come under the ban as it is promotion either indirectly or directly”

John Carlisle of the Tobacco Manufacturers Association said, “It’s one
that may well have to be challenged in the courts”.

DoH to take control of Health Authority tasks

The Department of Health is take direct control of the campaigns run
by the Health Education Authority in a move that gives yet more power
to the Central Office of Information reports Campaign.

Uncle Sam v Big Tobacco

‘The Clinton administration’s lawsuit against the tobacco companies is
a disgrace’ opens the economist.

Such comments as, ‘For the most part, smoking kills people after the
productive years of their lives, so make a full contribution to health
and pension schemes’

It concludes that ‘Soon there will have to be a new health warning:
The surgeon-general has determined that the Clinton administration is
dangerous for your democracy’.

French Authority seeks PR aid for anti-smoking work
The French Health Education Authority, is expected to launch a new
anti-smoking campaign in spring 2000.

Publicis Etoile, who currently hold the brief, are expected to repitch
for the contract, although the Comité Francais d’Education pour la
santé have not ruled out appointing advertising and PR agencies from
separate pitch partnerships if necessary.

More coverage of cigarette firms challenge to advertising regulations

Rob Griffin reports further on the impending ‘High Court Showdown’
with the government over its decision to bring in a tobacco
advertising ban two years ahead of schedule. The Tobacco
Manufacturers Association believes the restrictions are illegal as
they are based on a European Directive which is under consideration by
the European Court of Justice.

It is reported that the case is due to start next Monday.

John Carlisle Letter: Suing Tobacco firms

John Carlise, of the TMA takes issue with the Chief Executives call
for the UK government to follow the example of its counterpart in the
USA by suing tobacco companies.

He argues that, “the industry does not seek to recruit young people to
nicotine addiction by subtly equating smoking with desirable
activities and lifestyles”
