Taxation
Raising the tax on tobacco products is an important public health measure that creates a financial incentive not to smoke.
Before the Budget each year, ASH produces a submission to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, supported by numerous other health charities, regarding changes to tobacco taxes in the Budget and other key issues on tobacco policy.

The Effects of Increasing Tobacco Taxation: A Cost Benefit and Public Finances Analysis
This report shows how raising tobacco prices through taxation can result in significant benefits to the economy. A 5% price increase would result in 190,000 fewer smokers and increase government revenue by £520 million per year in the first five years.

February 1999: Tobacco taxation amounts to £10.5 billion per year whereas a figure for NHS spending on tobacco related disease is £1.7 billion. Does this make tobacco tax unfair? ASH says 'no' - the comparison is a false one. Tobacco tax is not and never has been a down payment on the cost dealing with ill health caused by smoking.
