'Anti-smoking guidance'
Government watchdogs on medicines are to prepare guidance for GPs on the use
of anti-smoking treatments including Zyban pills, nicotine patches, gum and
nasal sprays. The national institute for clinical excellence will compare
their cost and clinical effectiveness to help sharpen the campaign to reduce
smoking rates, cancer and heart disease.

'Puff of smoke'

The Director reports that companies should look closely at their smoking
policy and the problems of passive of smoking at the work in light of the
Health and Safety Commission's decision to recommend the new proposals on
the Approved Code on Practice (ACoP) on passive smoking at work to the
government.

Preview of WHO 'Artworks' exhibition

The General Practitioner profiles the forthcoming art exhibition by the
World Health Organisation at Whitechapel Art Gallery, London. The artwork
aims to inspire smokers to think about quitting smoking and the exhibition
will run between the 22-24 November. It reports that, 'The work of cutting
edge modern artists will also appear in surgery waiting rooms and pharmacies
from December.'
