Jobs to go as Reynolds tightens belt

RJ Reynolds said it would cut 8 percent of its workforce, take a $145m
charge and sell two businesses in the latest sign of the pressure the big
cigarette companies are under from cut-price cigarettes.

The number two US company also narrowed its 2002 earnings forecast.

The jobs cute are expected to lead to savings of up to $50m next year and
$75m in 2004.

“The decisions regarding job eliminations and divestitures has been very
difficult, but the realities of today’s cigarette market place demand that
we realign our cost structures”, said RJ Reynolds chief executive,
Schindler.

Silk Cut bows out with ‘fat lady’ swansong

Singing fat ladies will form the basis of Silk Cut’s advertising swansong as
owner Gallaher Tobacco faces up to the impending tobacco industry ad ban.

Silk Cut’s creative agency M&CSaatchi has developed a press and poster
campaign on the theme of the maxim ‘It’s not over ’til the fat lady sings’.
Gallaher confirmed it was considering the idea with a view to launch it in
the coming weeks.
