Blair's seven pillars (including public health)

New Labour's mission is far from completed, Tony Blair declared
yesterday as he promised seven far-reaching Reform Acts for the next
Parliament.

In a speech setting out his third-term vision Mr Blair contrasted his
radical agenda with the "minimalist" approach that had been adopted by
the Conservatives who, he said, were now moving backwards and towards
the right.

Amongst the economy, the looming pensions crisis, Mr Blair Found time to
lay out his vision for the future of public health, saying: "There is
general agreement that we could do more to tackle smoking and obesity in
particular, promoting the health of teenagers as much as older people".

Caterer & Hotelkeeper launch pro smoking ban campaign

The trade magazine Caterer & Hotelkeeper comes out strongly behind a ban
on smoking ban. Jessica Guinn reported on the recent Labour Party
Conference in Brighton, saying that John Reid's failure to address the
issue of banning smoking in enclosed public places disappointed those
hoping for some sort of announcement.

The magazine also is running a campaign petition targeting Secretary of
State for Health John Reid. The 'Stub Out Smoking' campaign petition
highlights the dangers of passive smoking, expresses 'concern that
hospitality professionals are subjected to the dangers if passive
smoking every time they go to work', and calls for a total ban on
smoking in UK workplaces.

The Guardian G2 section starts a fortnightly column following the
progress of Tanya Gold as she attempts to give up smoking. She has

Posters highlight smoking dangers

A new campaign highlighting the dangers from smoking in public places is
being launched in Northumberland.

Hard-hitting posters warning about the risk of breathing in second-hand
smoke are being displayed in public places.

The campaign is part of a government-backed initiative under the banner
of Smoke Free North East.

It follows recent government figures which revealed that more than
18,500 people in the region quit smoking in the year to March 2004.
