Tobacco is responsible for about one in six cases of heart disease and stroke, and about one third of all cancer. Over half of the social class difference in premature death can be explained by the difference in smoking rates between rich and poor - a gap that continues to widen. The Government’s Cancer Reform Strategy stresses the importance of preventative measures and notes that smoking is the single largest preventable risk factor for cancer. The Government plans to consult on the next steps for tobacco control and on the further regulation of tobacco products. This will include, for the first time, measures to reduce the harm to smokers who cannot quit. Dec 2007
