Wetherspoon's lead shows Government is lagging behind the demand for smoke-free pubs |
| The pub chain JD Wetherspoon has announced that it is to bring forward a total ban on smoking in its pubs, two years ahead of the Government's proposed timetable as set out in the public health White Paper, ‘Choosing Health'. Commenting on this move Deborah Arnott, Director of the health campaigning charity ASH, said:
“Once again JD Wetherspoon is at the forefront of policy development and is responding to customer demand. This is very encouraging news and we're sure that now Wetherspoon has set the trend, other pub chains will soon follow suit.
“It shows that the Government has nothing to fear from introducing legislation to make all pubs smokefree. The government should respond to this development and revise its plans so that all pubs become smokefree along with all other workplaces.”

| Notes and links: [1] JD Wetherspoon has always had a policy of having one-third of the area in all its pubs set aside as a non-smoking area . [2] According to the timetable set out in the ‘Choosing Health' white paper, by the end of 2007, all enclosed public places and workplaces, except for licensed premises will be smoke-free; arrangements for licensed premises will be in place by the end of 2008. |
