‘To keep trim after the weed, get out of puff’
A study from the University of Louisville in the US, published in
Nicotine and Tobacco Research has examined why ex-smokers put on
weight – and say it is only partly because they eat more. Dr Peter
Rowell, one of the authors, is quoted as saying, “The majority of the
weight gained after smoking cessation is accounted for by increased
food consumption, but approximately 30 per cent is left unuaccounted
for. Dr Rowell adds that, “Individuals who tend to smoke whilst moving
around during the day, rather than while watching TV in the evening,
experience greater smoking-related energy expenditure and may be at
greater risk for post-cessation weight gain.”
