EU Advertising Directive enters into force.

Dec - 2004

Point of Sale regulations enter into force.

July - 2004

Approval of brandsharing regulations to enter into force on 31 July 2005.

March - 2004

Point of sale regulations approved for entry into force on 21 December 2004.

Sept - 2003

Publication of the draft point of sale and brandsharing regulations. The regulations are notified to the European Commission to ensure compatibility with European law.

July - 2003

Ending of tobacco sponsorship of sport, except global sports (eg Formula 1 motor racing) which will be allowed to continue until July 2005.

May - 2003

The banning of tobacco promotion via direct mail and on-pack promotions takes effect.

Feb - 2003

The first phase of the UK Tobacco Advertising and Promotion Act comes into effect on 14th February. This covers the banning of advertising on billboards and in print media.

Dec - 2002

The Council of Health Ministers votes to accept the text of the European Directive on tobacco advertising. The directive requires member states to implement the law by 2005. This includes the phasing out of tobacco sponsorship of sport.

Oct/Nov - 2002

The Advertising bill is passed by Parliament and receives Royal Assent.

Aug - 2002

The Government publishes regulations to implement key components of the tobacco advertising bill and confirms its intention to complete passage of the bill through the Commons before the end of the year.
